mini staycation in Penang & balik kampung

Just last month I did another trip back to home sweet home with the fam~ We also did a mini staycation in Penang in Sunway Hotel Georgetown just so we can spend more time in the island.

Some other spots we visited include the Penang Bird Park, Batu Feringghi, Esplanade, the Aquarium, and Botanical Garden (my fav place!). Expect tons of food shots 😋

Balik Kampung Food Post

Balik kampung is Malay for "to return to your hometown" and for my mom, that meant the opportunity of stuffing me with tons of food ( =____=;) My parents kept asking if I am eating enough, even though I'm pretty sure my love for food and age have made losing weight quite a feat hahahaha #AsianParents #loveyouguyssomuchy

Which brings me to posting what I was fed ate the short weekend I was back. Mom was complaining I came back to short else she would "bring me around for more food". Wasn't too sure if that should make me feel bad or relieve...

If you don't believe me, see what we ordered for dinner the first evening I was back.

Mind you, these are a lot for three! What's more, I ended up eating most of it cause they're too full...

Food was good, we went to one of our family's favorite restaurant and ordered salted chicken à la Ipoh-style which was nicely cooked _ succulent and soft.

Then, this salted egg fried lotus root. Salivating just thinking about it.

Curry wild boar with not-cooked-enough beans but curry was good.

And sliced, steamed fish.

Later back home, drank ginger tea _ my favorite drink this year. Mom had made it earlier using ginger, longan and rock sugar. So-o-o good. Mental note to self to try making bachelorette-size ones.

Plus, I omnomnom-ed keropok or crackers which my parents bought from Terengganu (in white container).

Mom fried some more after I nomnom-ed all of it (//____//)

The frying process is very interesting, check it out!

~

Day 2 I woked up at 9.30AM, missing my chance to go eat Dim Sum but parents bought me pau. Later, lunch was at one of our favorite food court and you bet, we ordered a little bit of everything.

Black vineger pork, curry fish and blanched vege topped with fried garlic and soy sauce. Never tried this stall before but boy, they're good. And all for RM20, a price you probably can't get in Kuala Lumpur.

Apart from that, we had crispy on the outside and succulent in the inside roast duck goodness. Omnomnomnom everything happily but full!

Did I mentioned there was cendol aka shaved iced as well? ( =___=!)  Yeah, welcome to Malaysia, the country with tons of yummy food and people who knows how to enjoy them twenty four seven.

I attended a wedding dinner that day so go check my previous post if you wanna know what Chinese's 8-course wedding dishes look like.

Fast forward to day 3 breakie before I leave for KL. Had porridge and tons of pau cause aha, aha I like it! Also had fried dumpling stuffed with salted pork filling.

Told you there were lotsa pau-s!

#BalikKampung Food Post

Yessie, as my title suggests, I went back to my hometown. I don't really do this often but many people kept suggesting I should go home more often and so happened my bff came home for a visit from Germany, I thought I should pay her a visit as well. While I did get a chance to meet her (and her sis and dad), eat good food, have proper rest, color my new coloring book and dragging mom into the bandwagon, my balik kampung trip was only a 3-day visit because I couldn't get a tix to go back a day later (which is today). Some of my old friends found out I was home but we didn't get to meet up for the same reason. So sad, I know (T____T) BFF got a 3-week off, I wish I can get that long of a holiday while working as well.

That aside, this will mostly be a food post, from Day 1 dinner. I was already home by noon and had lunch and tea time in Penang but totally forgotten to take pics... In case you're wondering I had chap fan and mixed vege pig's intestine soup for lunch and nasi lemak and apam balik for teatime.

Now photos time! Day 1 dinner at Ah Chong's Fisherman Restaurant. First time makan-ing (Malay for dining plus English continuous tense LOL) here.

It's by the sea so the scenery's awesome!

Like most Chinese seafood restaurants, they have aquariums of life catches (and  bred?).

Curry crab yum yum!

Food is alright but don't quite fancy the sambal kangkung/vege and lala too sour though mom loves the latter.

Then dad even went to buy durian, because ahem ahem, he adores me LOL #vainmax and I ate a lot of them during my 3-day there. So much that my durian craving is satisfied. Medium breed sort, not close to the creaminess of Musang King or Red/Blue Lobster or whatever durian with fancy names but good, medium softness and fat flesh. Makes you drool yet? Cuz I am. Though my fam and  I think they are pure extortion with 1kg costing over RM80. Hellooo durian extortionists, I get my fancy names durian from Aeon for RM40!

durian~

Day 2 breakie is good old days mihoon with sambal. A bit oily to my liking but #tasteofhome

mihun goreng

Lunch is chap fan and yummy lak thang soup (pig intestine cooked with tons of pepper soup), my favorite!

Then island trip again after lunchtime because I wanted to visit dear BFF. Parents wasn't so keen of me going there, I'm guessing its after a year of not driving my parents were not too trusting of my navigation skills.... #AsianParents #gotpeopledrivemeyayyy

I'm glad I did, miss chatting with these people! They're the kind of annoying (in a good way) friends ❤❤❤ Here are what we ordered from Manhattan Fish Market, just drinks tho~

Then dinner at this duck rice place mom recommend! I super likey! So many makan place I haven't tried gosh.... I obviously haven't been home frequently the past years to try them out (>___<)

Duck rice!

This place is actually Penang version of food street or you can call it a night market style makan place so there are lotsa food stalls and other stalls selling kuih/desserts, buns, biscuits, soya milk and soya curd (Hokkien Tau Hua and Mandarin Tau Fu Far), and the list goes on. Tapau-ed (Hokkien for takeaway) some Ang Ku and Tau Hua and bought some Chinese biscuits for souvenirs to share among colleagues.

~❤~

And finally, day 3 lunchie~

Yum yum yum! Small clams (?), pickled vege, braised duck, fried pork, tofu and braised pig's intestine.

And cendol! Taste as good as Penang Road!

They installed a super huge fan in this foodcourt, pretty awesome.

Dinner is porridge again because we had super early dinner as I needed to catch the train after that. Super yummy despite the simplicity.

Braised chicken feet, braised pork, fried pork, okra with soy sauce, mushrooms (me think) and anchovies, dried shrimps in lime sauce dressing.

Close up. This is super appetizing!

And these are pretty much most of them.

Oh, I took ETS to and from my hometown! So convenient now that it only takes 5 hours to go home, previously was 10 hours. Aha. Exactly why I didn't fancy trips home.. Recommendable as it is much more convenient, more legs space, cleaner and actually less noise. Cafe size is much smaller too but at least you have a dining tray right in front of you.

Blueberry shortcake I got from KL Sentral. Pretty good actually.

a slice of my life

So as I have mentioned in my earlier post, I was around in Penang for a while. Let me relate to you an incident that happened.

Since it was Wesak Day, I tagged along with my friend and her family to go pray. Like in most temples, we have to take off our shoes before entering the temple building. That day, when I got back my sandals were missing! I looked frantically everywhere but there were no sign of me misplacing them.

We deduced someone had taken mine either on purpose or also because someone has taken theirs. And to think I just bought the pair just 2 days before since my other sandal's strap broke!! *facepalm*

Because I couldn’t go back barefooted for the rest of the day my friends told me to choose another and they went looking around for some slippers for me. I was like, really?? Seriously??

In the end I did walk off with someone else slippers and felt guilty as shit.

m(ToT)m I’M SO SORRYYY!!

But I made sure to choose a cheap-looking, worn-out pair of flip flops. My friends were jokingly recommending "better looking" and "branded" ones as though we were shopping for shoes wth #whatfriendsareforright

The next temple we went, I prayed for forgiveness for stealing the slippers wtf. I related this to my sis and she said despite praying I'll still go to hell for that…

(;Д;) ( >∀< ) {go to hell d)

Apparently, this “vicious cycle” _as my friend put it_ is nothing new and even my mom has experienced this so many times she now chooses to go pray at temples that don't have rules of needing to take off shoes or she simply wears her oldest, most worn-out pair. I'm so-o taking notes on this.

If you’re wondering what happened to the pair I took, in the end I threw it away and for the remaining of my holidays, I settled for a pair of really crappy, RM10 flip flops which I got from the morning market...

In one of the temples we went ⇓

And oh, I also prayed that my slipper thief will carry the weight of my crime and then maybe I'll be spared wth.

i was in Penang~! / Penang Bridge Sunset

Hello people~!

I’m finally home again after a week away from the hustle and bustle of KL city. And away from proper internet connection wth. Somehow I always choose the time when my data’s dying to go home..

While I was back in hometown, I went to Penang island to hang out with friends for a few days~ While driving across the Penang Bridge, managed to capture one of the prettiest sunset everrr! (*°▽°*)
